I like the fact that Google Calendar names are now represented as categories on Windows Mobile devices, and that specifying a category maps it to the appropriate Google Calendar when synchronized.

However, a side-effect of this new functionality seems to be that if I create a new event on my device, I must manually select a category -- otherwise, the event will not be synchronized.

In such a case (no category explicitly specified on the device), ought the event be mapped to my default Google Calendar?

What you say is how it should work. If the service can't match a category on a new event to a calendar, then it defaults to the main calendar. Therefore if there's no category, the event will be created in the main calendar. I just tested this myself in case something had rotted in the code, but it worked as expected.

Probably the best thing is for you to open a support ticket so we can trace the operation on your account to determine what's going wrong.

Thanks for the reply, and the re-test.

I just confirmed that what you're saying is correct -- I tested a new event created on my phone with no category, and it got sync'd to the default Google Calendar, with the correct category then getting mapped back to the event on the device.

So it does appear to be working now; but know for sure that an event I created this weekend on my device did not sync, even after several tries.

Happy to say it's working at the moment.

Thanks!

Hmm...a drive-by bug.
What's your username ? If you have premium service (which I guess you do since that's how you get categories...) then we can usually check the device's sync history a day or two back in time.

Yep, those drive-by bugs can be pesky!

I'll PM you the details.
