Today a new issue.
The contents of my phones inbox keep coming and going.

I have tried changing the days to sync which seemed to help last time but no luck.

Anyone else having this erratic behavoiur today?

We have seen a few users (only a few, perhaps 0.5% of our GMail user population)
affected by what appears to be a Google IMAP problem or outage.
The symptoms are as you've described : the phone tries to sync back a change (usually
message read flag change), and that triggers an out of sync condition, which in turn leads
to the messages being deleted and re-fetched. Except since IMAP is down, they aren't re-fetched.
It would be interesting to know if a desktop IMAP client works or not at the same time.

Based on what we're seeing in the service log files, the problem has resolved itself in the
past 30 minutes or so.

I have been having this same problem for several days now -- my inbox keeps resyncing. It's driving me crazy. I'm syncing a Google Apps for Your Domain account.

I have lost count of how many times in the last 24 hours my inbox has vanished from in front of my eyes.

Later it starts to come back with old messages and either all returns or vanishes again.

Also noted that sometimes while the phone is looking at the empty inbox for a couple of miniutes that the application just closes.

Contacts and calender do not seem to be effected by this issue.

HELP!

I just noticed this today as well (in fact, the messaged disappeared from my phone this morning). No older messages (oldest is 7 days) are being shown on my phone anymore... I've tried resetting the sync, turning off the mail account, changing the number of days synced, etc. Nothing is working. Any other ideas on how we can get this working again?

Hi, we've investigated one report like this in some depth and determined that the problem originated with the phone's sync software. I've enabled tracing on your accounts so we can see exactly what's happening, and whether it's the same syndrome. One common factor seems to be that the affected users have all been using the service for quite some time so possibly there's an issue with the phone filling up some storage, something like that. It may be worthwhile trying the following procedure to clean up the sync software's state:

1. Delete the account on the phone.
2. Reboot the phone.
3. Re-create the account on the phone.

That seemed to work. Messages are back on my phone that disappeared earlier. Now I just need to correct my calendar colors again.

Also, I should mention that I have an iPhone 3G not a 3GS and had the issue so it's nit only on the 3GS.

Thanks for the quick response.

Just happened again. Everything was working fine until 8:50pm eastern time. Now only new emails are again visible in my inbox.

I'll wait to reset the account to see of you can find the problem and propose a fix.

My one lost all its messages also yesterday but by the end of the day they were all back...

Guess what?

Yes, you got it, my inbox is empty yet again

Please can we have a fix so if your sever cannot see gmails servers it does not assume it is empty and deletes everything.

I also assume this cannot be good for iphone battery life if it has to download everything several times a day.

Depression setting in

It did it again this morning but being at home I just reset the sync days on my iphone and the inbox list starts to populate again.

Have I posted this issue in the wrong forum area or is support just a little thin on the ground?

I'm having the problem again this morning. First all messages disappeared, then they came back, and now they are severely out of sync. Not sure what is going on.

Hi there (ipmitchell). This forum isn't the official support mechanism (although generally we do notice problems reported here and respond).
I took a look to see if there was an open support ticket from you, but so far couldn't see one.

Anyway, we've checked your account and we think we can see the cause for your resyncing.
I'll post here once the investigation is complete.

Apoligies for not logging a proper support call...

Anyway should I log one as the problem still occurs?

Once yesterday and three times this morning

Infact they have all gone again now with just three new items in my inbox - 200+ items earlier.

Hi, it's always a good idea to open a support ticket.

We are looking at a problem that results in the symptoms you're seeing.

Note that if you have an iPhone, it can "lose" messages in the resync process, but only messages that are beyond the "days to sync" setting.
e.g. if you have 3 days mail to sync configured, the device can retain older mail, but will not re-fetch those messages on a resync.

Update: the likely cause for this syndrome has been identified and the fix is expected to be deployed later today.
